Paul Whitehurst is de zoon van een rijk gezin in het Virginia van de jaren '30. Hij ontsnapt echter graag aan de netheid en striktheid van zijn weliswaar liefdevolle ouders door op bezoek te gaan bij de wat armere familie Dabney. De jongste zoon daarvan, die zich nooit hoeft te wassen, is zijn beste vriend. Als Pauls ouders een lange reis moeten maken om een begrafenis van een ver familielid bij te wonen, logeert hij zolang bij de Dabneys. Gedurende die tijd klopt er echter een oude man aan, die beweert 99 jaar geleden in slavernij te zijn geboren bij de familie, en nu op hun terrein begraven wil worden.

Paul Whitehurst is the son of a wealthy family in Virginia in the 30s. He escaped, however, like the cleanliness and rigor of his true loving parents to visit the somewhat poorer Dabney family. The youngest son of them, who never have to wash, is his best friend. When Paul's parents have to make a long trip to a funeral of a distant relative to attend, he is staying until the Dabney. During that time, however, a true old man, who claims 99 years ago to have been born into slavery in the family, and now wants to be buried in their field.
