Obra maestra del cine negro, y en opinión de muchos, la mejor película del director Jules Dassin. Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) trabaja a comisión en un club pero lleva toda la vida esperando su gran oportunidad para hacerse rico. Para ello no duda en embaucar a quien haga falta para llevar a cabo sus planes. Desgraciadamente la fortuna nunca está de su parte y sus negocios siempre fracasan, aunque ésta vez parece que su suerte puede cambiar…
Jules Dassin se fue de Hollywood tras la "caza de brujas" en 1949. "Night and the City" es su primera película inglesa tras su marcha de Norteamérica. Tiene 2 versiones; la americana tuvo diferente música -de Franz Waxman- y diferente edición.
Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is a London hustler with ambitious plans that never work out. One day, when he encounters the most famous Greco-Roman wrestler in the world, Gregorius, at a London wrestling arena run by his son Kristo, he dreams up a scheme that he thinks will finally be his ticket to financial independence. As Fabian attempts to con everyone around him to get his scheme to work, he of course only ends up conning himself. This is an interesting tale of blind ambition, self-deception, broken dreams, and how a man who always thinks he's ahead of the game ends up tripping himself very badly.
